President David Rew
David Rew - President of the Rotary Club of Mt ElizaThe Rotary Club of Mt Eliza is part of an enormous global movement which welcomes all comers to join or support us in our determined fight to eradicate disease, homelessness, poverty and all disadvantage in the world in which we live.
Whether in our local community or the far- flung areas of the globe, there is so much we can do and with your help we have already all but eradicated poliomyelitis with incredibly generous support from the Bill and Melinda Gates foundation which gives two for one for every dollar we raise, with further funding from UNICEF and World Health Organisation, resulting in a total of $7.26 billion to this date.
We financed research into SIDS which is now almost a thing of the past, thanks to the determination of the Australian Rotary Clubs to find the cause of this tragic and too frequent occurrence.
Currently we are involved in education programmes in Cambodia and East Timor, and on the local scene are much involved in our local schools’ education and advancement programmes as well as subscribing considerable sums for the advancement of care for those with varying disabilities, bowel cancer awareness programmes, and other life-saving and improving schemes.
Over the past year we have supported our local Frankston Hospital with the purchase of several hi-tech beds for children which were badly needed and are now in full use.
We are supporting water purification systems for places in developing countries where death from water borne disease is rampant, so saving hundreds and thousands of lives.
Wherever you look, here or around the world, you will find Rotary doing what Rotary does which is “making a difference”. The situations we are confronted with are often heartbreaking but by the end of the day, where we have “made a difference”, we have the satisfaction which comes with a smiling face and the knowledge that the lives of those affected have been so much improved.
In the life style we have created for ourselves today, fewer people have sufficient time to pause to look around them and, in many cases, are unaware of the trials and tribulations experienced by others. We are where we are through hard work and occasionally through an element of luck, but we all react with the same emotions when faced with hardship experienced by others.
Rotary is an avenue by which we can all benefit ourselves and others. The feeling of pride and satisfaction is second to none when we give others less fortunate a helping hand, and all it takes is a few moments out of our lives.
The Rotary Club of Mt Eliza welcomes all who would like to be part of this great world wide organisation to enjoy the fellowship and conviviality, and join with us in making the world a better place for all. Our relatively short meetings are held each week at Toorak College with a wide range of superb speakers entertaining or educating us on a vast array of topics.
If you would like to be part of our group, or attend one of our meetings, please contact me, David Rew on 0418 553 691, or our Secretary, Ross Schweitzer on 0407 010 644, at any time.
